How to care for your bamboo matcha whisk (Chasen)

The bamboo whisk, or Chasen, is an essential for preparing matcha the traditional way. It helps create the smooth, frothy texture that makes matcha so enjoyable. Like any other tool, your whisk needs proper care to stay in good condition, and since it’s made of natural bamboo, it won’t last forever. Here are our tips to keep your Chasen in great shape and know when it’s time for replacement.

Before First Use

Bloom your whisk. Before using your whisk for the first time, soak it in warm water (not boiling) for 5-10 minutes. This softens the bamboo, opens up the tines, and helps prevent cracking.

Daily Care & Cleaning

Soak before using. Soak your whisk in warm water for 30-60 seconds. This softens the tines and helps prevent breakage.

Don’t let matcha dry on the whisk. Rinse only with water, no soap. Just rinse gently with warm water after each use. Soap can damage the bamboo and leave residue.

Gently dry. Shake off excess water and let the whisk air-dry naturally.

Proper storage

Always store your whisk with the prongs facing down on a whisk holder. This helps it keep its rounded shape and prevents mold. If you don’t have a whisk holder, keep it upright in a clean, dry place.

How Long Does a Whisk Last?

A Chasen is a natural, handcrafted tool, so it gradually wears down with use. Depending on how often you prepare matcha, a whisk can last anywhere form 1 – 3 months. If you use it daily, you may need to replace it more often. Look out for these signs:

  • Broken or bend prongs

  • Difficulty frothing your matcha

  • A loose or frayed shape

When this happens, it is time to order a new one.

Your matcha whisk is not just an accessory, it’s a key part of the ritual. By caring for it properly and replacing it when needed. You'll always enjoy the smooth, foamy, and delicious matcha experience you deserve.
